Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, and the Game Awards: 2026-2027 awards season prediction markets

Key highlights

  • Awards season is not four separate events. It is one continuous arc, film to television to music to video games, with a live tradeable market on each ceremony.
  • The deepest pools sit in two places: Best Picture at the Oscars and Game of the Year at the Game Awards, where the longest lead-in time builds the most volume.
  • Reading these markets means knowing three things: the number on a card is the ask, not the midpoint; a nominees market is not a winner market; and Polymarket-international is not the same venue as Kalshi-US.

Awards season prediction markets put a live price on who wins, and the choices run wider than Best Picture. You can back a specific actor or director in the acting and directing races, an album for Album of the Year, an artist for Best New Artist, a show for Outstanding Drama or Comedy, or a game for Game of the Year. Some markets ask who gets nominated rather than who wins, or which film leads the field in total nominations. Each is a yes or no contract that pays one dollar if it resolves yes and nothing if it does not. Television settles first, at the Emmys in September. Video games follow at the Game Awards in December. Film and music voting builds through the Golden Globes in January, runs through a guild-heavy stretch in February, and resolves at the Oscars in March.

Film carries the deepest books on both platforms, concentrated in Best Picture and the lead acting and directing races. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey became a market fixture the moment it opened in July, and its ensemble cast keeps several acting categories tied to the same story.

The other three arrive later in the season, each at a different stage. The Emmys land first, in September, with the nominees already set, so those markets have little left to surprise them. The Game Awards come in December, and hinge on a release question as much as a quality one: a game has to ship during the year to qualify, so a delay can pull a favorite out of contention. The Grammys land last, in February, and their nominees are not named until the fall, so those markets stay the thinnest and most speculative of the four.

What moves awards markets.

A handful of recurring forces reprice these markets well before the ceremony airs.
  • Guild and precursor awards. The DGA, PGA, SAG, and BAFTA all vote and announce in the weeks before the Oscars, and each guild's membership overlaps heavily with the matching Academy branch, so a guild winner functions as an early poll of the people who will decide the Oscar.
  • For-your-consideration campaigns. Studios and labels spend the months between nominations and the ceremony running trade ads, screener mailings, and events aimed directly at voters.
  • Eligibility windows and release slips. Every category has a cutoff date, and a film, album, or game that misses it rolls to the following year's race. Grand Theft Auto VI's two prior delays are the clearest live example of how a slip changes which year's market a title belongs to.
  • The preferential ballot at the Oscars. Best Picture is decided by ranked-choice voting among Academy members, which rewards broad support across the membership over passionate but narrow backing.
  • Nominations day. The moment nominees are announced, a market that had been spread across dozens of possible titles concentrates onto the confirmed field of five to ten contenders, and every existing contract reprices at once.

Recent winners, and how much to trust the favorite.

The last five results in each category, newest first, and what they say about pricing the favorite. The lesson across the film categories: the guild awards (PGA for Best Picture, DGA for Best Director) predict the Oscar far better than press buzz or the Golden Globes. As of July 2026.

Oscar Best Picture2026 One Battle After Another, 2025 Anora, 2024 Oppenheimer, 2023 Everything Everywhere All at Once, 2022 CODAThe PGA winner took Best Picture in all five years. Trust a favorite that has already won the PGA; fade one that has not.
Oscar Best Director2026 Paul Thomas Anderson, 2025 Sean Baker, 2024 Christopher Nolan, 2023 Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, 2022 Jane CampionThe DGA winner took Best Director in all five years, the safest favorite on the board. It can split from Best Picture (2022), so price the two apart.

Key terms.

The terms these markets use, defined in plain English.
TermDefinition
AskThe current price to buy a yes position; what a market card displays. Not the same as a blended midpoint between the best bid and best ask.
MidpointThe halfway point between the best bid and best ask; the reference point for checking whether a mutually exclusive field sums close to one dollar.
Winner marketA market on whether a single nominee wins the award. Only one contract in the field resolves yes, so the field's midpoint prices should sum to roughly one dollar.
Nominees marketA market on whether a title is nominated at all; each contract is an independent yes or no question, so several can resolve yes.
Mutually exclusive fieldA set of winner contracts covering one race, where exactly one outcome can be true.
Preferential ballotThe ranked-choice voting method the Academy uses for Best Picture, which favors broad support over passionate but narrow support.
FYC campaignA for-your-consideration push: trade ads, screeners, and events studios and labels run to reach voters between nominations and the ceremony.
Field or otherA residual contract covering every nominee not listed as its own market, common in crowded categories.

Frequently asked questions

  1. How do awards prediction markets work?

Each market is a yes or no contract on one outcome, such as a specific film winning Best Picture. The contract pays one dollar if the outcome happens and nothing if it does not. Traders buy and sell at the current ask price, and the price moves as new information, such as a guild win, a nomination, or a release delay, shifts what traders think will happen.

  2. Where can you trade awards markets?

Polymarket and Kalshi both list awards contracts, with Kalshi carrying the deepest books for this category. Polymarket operates as an international exchange and blocks US persons from trading. Kalshi is a CFTC-regulated exchange and is tradeable from the United States.

  3. What is the biggest awards market?

Best Picture at the Oscars draws the deepest volume of any awards contract, followed by Game of the Year at the Game Awards. Both benefit from a long lead-in: guild season for film, a full year of releases for games, giving traders months to build a position before the ceremony.

  4. What is the difference between a nominees market and a winner market?

A winner market is mutually exclusive: only one nominee in the field can resolve yes, so the yes prices across the whole field should sum to roughly one dollar at the midpoint. A nominees market asks a different, independent question for each title, will it be nominated, so multiple contracts can resolve yes and the field's prices commonly sum well past one dollar.

  5. When is each ceremony?

    The 78th Emmys air September 14, 2026. The Game Awards 2026 air December 10, 2026. The 84th Golden Globes air January 10, 2027. The 69th Grammys air February 7, 2027. The 99th Oscars air March 14, 2027.

  6. Does an early ceremony win predict the Oscars?

Guild awards carry real signal because their voting memberships overlap heavily with the matching Academy branch. SAG members and Academy actors-branch members overlap by more than a thousand people, and the directors and producers guilds overlap their Academy branches in similar fashion, so a guild winner functions as an early read of a meaningful slice of the actual Oscar electorate, taken before Academy voting even closes.

  7. How is Game of the Year decided?

The Game Awards combines an invited jury of more than 100 video game media and influencer outlets, worth the large majority of the result, with a smaller public online vote. Jury members submit an unranked top-five ballot, and the titles that appear on the most ballots become nominees.
